Nikon 300mm F4 w/Teleconverter vs. Sigma 50-500mm?

I am considering buying a lens in the near future to use to photograph surfing. I am looking at the older Nikon 300mm F4 and the Sigma 50-500mm. They are both around the same price used. I would be using the Nikon with a 1.4x TC making it a 420mm f5.6. In terms of image quality, which would be better at the same 420mm area, the Sigma or Nikon with TC?

Best Answer

The Nikkor 300 mm f/4 with the show no limitations.

You will really have to test them to see which one performs the best

The Nikkor 300 mm with the Nikon Teleconverter will be an excellent combination, however, I have a colleague who shoots sports and he just picked up the Sigma 500-500 mm and he has had no problems with it so far as far as image quality is concerned. The real test is how it performs in ten to fifteen years.
